Student Adventures: A Whirlwind Turkish Getaway During Reading Week
Our exciting adventure took us to the enchanting lands of Turkey during a much-needed reading week break from our studies in the UK. It was a spontaneous decision with a close friend, made even easier by the quick processing of our e-visas and the relatively short travel time. Turkey just felt like the right choice!
Given the recent news of security concerns, we opted for a local tour group. This gave us peace of mind, knowing we had a safety net, and it meant we could truly relax and enjoy the sights without the stress of planning. It was the ultimate hands-off travel experience!
With only a week to spare, our five-day exploration focused on two incredible cities: Istanbul and Cappadocia. We hit up all the iconic spots – the majestic Blue Mosque, the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia, the mysterious Basilica Cistern, and the charming town of Göreme. We also indulged in some unforgettable activities like a Bosphorus cruise, a magical hot air balloon ride, and cruising in a classic vintage car. Honestly, our five-day itinerary was perfectly balanced, offering an amazing travel experience.
A Few Handy Tips for Your Turkish Trip
- Ladies, remember to cover your head with a scarf when visiting the Blue Mosque, and avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.
- Students, don't forget your student IDs! Many attractions offer significant discounts on entry fees.
- Avoid exchanging currency at the airport; the rates are usually poor. Head to the city center for much better exchange rates.
- If a hot air balloon ride is on your must-do list, book it in advance and keep an eye on the weather forecast.
- Be mindful of menus that might have different prices for locals and tourists. Always double-check to avoid getting overcharged.
- Pack an extra warm jacket. Cappadocia experiences a significant temperature drop in the mornings and evenings, especially if you plan to watch the hot air balloons ascend.
Our Group Tour Experience
We had a fantastic time with our tour group, and there wasn't a single thing to complain about! Our ride was a comfortable seven-seater vehicle, perfect for reclining and relaxing. The driver was incredibly skilled, and even someone prone to motion sickness like myself felt barely any discomfort throughout the journey. The hotels were all star-rated and spotlessly clean, including a memorable night in a traditional cave hotel. At each attraction, our guide would provide an insightful introduction before leaving us free to explore, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere at our own pace. It felt wonderfully spontaneous and liberating.
If you're still pondering where to go for your reading week, we highly recommend considering Turkey. It's a destination that truly lives up to the hype!
