Hallstatt: Driving in Style (My Way, My Experience!)

Road Trip Tips to Hallstatt, My Way!

I noticed banyak (many) posts on how to get to Hallstatt, but not a lot about driving there yourself. I went back in May and nak (want to) share my experience with you guys!

1️⃣ Choosing Your Route

From Munich or Salzburg, Google Maps usually directs you to the shortest and fastest route (highlighted in bold). This road has less traffic, but there are sections with weak phone signal and narrow roads. If you meet oncoming traffic, you might need to squeeze into a gap to let them pass!

The perk? You'll drive through quiet and peaceful kampungs (villages).

The other route is more popular, passing lakes like Wolfgangsee. Remember to choose the "longer" route to enjoy the scenery!

2️⃣ Parking in Hallstatt

Hallstatt has restricted vehicle access, but only for the old town. Driving your own car is still fine. The parking lots are quite near to the town.

My tips: Book an Airbnb in the south of the village. They often have parking and it's only a 15-minute walk to town. Staying overnight in the village means you get to enjoy the peace in the evenings and early mornings. After 9am, the day-trippers arrive and it gets crowded!

3️⃣ Stay Two Nights!

If you can, book two nights in the village to enjoy the early morning views. When the village gets crowded during the day, take your car and explore the surrounding lakes, or take a day trip to Salzburg. It's better than staying in Salzburg and just doing a day trip to the village.

4️⃣ Panorama Viewpoint Tips

The panorama viewpoint is great for photos of the scenery, but not so great for photos of yourself (because it's so crowded!). Try walking south from the pier. It's less crowded, and you can take beautiful pictures of the lake.

5️⃣ Cash is King (Sometimes!)

During my entire trip, the only place that needed cash was Hallstatt (to pay the tourist tax and buy snacks). So, remember to bring small Euro notes!

That's all folks, 5 tips to share. Hope it helps those planning to visit!
