Important Notes for Camping at Bãi Thùng, Malaysia
Bãi Thùng sits pretty along the DT702 highway connecting the beauty of Bình Hưng (Khánh Hòa) and Vĩnh Hy (Ninh Thuận). Years ago, it was a secret spot for camping enthusiasts during weekends. Since Vĩnh Hy became popular, Bãi Thùng's charm has been discovered, too. You'll now find some folks offering camping services right on the beach!
The Beach Itself: A Closer Look
From above, the beach looks spacious and stunning, with clear blue waters and a line of shady trees. However, get closer, and you'll find coarse sand mixed with coral fragments. The tide brings in some seaweed and debris, so be mindful of that.
Getting There: The Road Less Traveled
The initial stretch of road leading down to the beach is decent. But the final part? It gets pretty bumpy! If you're on a motorcycle, a manual transmission is recommended. Cars with low ground clearance can make it down, but you'll need to drive carefully. Alternatively, you can park at the top and enjoy a leisurely walk down.
Facilities (or Lack Thereof!)
This is a "DIY" beach. Currently, there's only one family selling bottled drinks, instant noodles, and simple snacks. They also offer freshwater showers for a small fee (around RM 4).
Weather and Tides: Know Before You Go
On breezy days, the beach is cool and pleasant. But on windless days, it can get quite stuffy, even by the sea. Be aware of the tides and avoid setting up your tent too close to the water's edge.
Things to Do Around Bãi Thùng
Besides swimming, chilling, and soaking in the natural beauty, there's a cool cave near Bãi Thùng. After sunrise, you can SUP (stand-up paddleboard) out to explore and snap some photos. Just be mindful of the boats from the Bình Hưng tours that often stop there for photo ops. I'll share a video soon so you can visualize it better!
