Thailand Aiming for 'Walking Exercise' for Tourists at the Airport
Massive Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Planned
Thailand is seriously ramping up its airport game, folks! They're pushing ahead with a huge expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport, specifically building a gigantic South Terminal. We're talking about a terminal spanning a whopping 1 million square meters – set to be the second largest in the world!
Airports of Thailand (AOT) has adjusted its investment plans, increasing the budget from 140 billion baht to a substantial 170 billion baht. What's included in this massive project?
- South Terminal: This beast of a terminal boasts 1 million square meters and can handle a staggering 70 million passengers annually. It's tipped to be the second largest single passenger terminal globally, after Istanbul Airport.
- 4th Runway: More space for those planes to land and take off smoothly.
- East Expansion: An expansion of the existing main passenger terminal on the eastern side.
- VIP Terminal: An exclusive 80,000 square meter terminal located at the end of Hall A. Think of it as airport luxury, my friends!
- General Aviation (GA) Terminal: Covering 100,000 square meters.
- Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) Center: Keeping those planes in tip-top shape.
- Airport City: Spanning 550 rai (a Thai unit of land area).
Once complete, Suvarnabhumi Airport will be able to handle a total of 150 million passengers per year, considering all its passenger areas. This would potentially make Suvarnabhumi the second largest airport in the world, just behind Dubai Airport. Construction is expected to kick off around 2027, with the grand opening planned for 2033. Get ready for a whole new airport experience!
